01 / THE ARRIVAL

THE PROJECT
BEGINS.

The Mk8 GTI arrived as a damaged auction car with a long road ahead. What looked like a straightforward rebuild quickly became a project that demanded mechanical work, front-end assembly, body repair, paint and plenty of diagnosis.

The goal was never just to make it look finished. The goal was to bring the car back properly, understand every problem along the way and document the real process.

02 / THE REBUILD

THE ROAD BACK.

The build moved from major mechanical work to final troubleshooting — with each stage revealing the next problem to solve.

01 / DIAGNOSIS

Assess the Damage

Understanding the auction car, identifying what was damaged and planning the parts and work needed to move forward.

02 / MECHANICAL

Transmission & Front End

Transmission installation and front-end assembly brought the GTI back toward becoming a complete, functioning car.

03 / BODY

Repair & Paint

With the mechanical work coming together, the body was repaired and painted to move the project from wrecked car to finished GTI.

04 / TROUBLESHOOTING

The ABS Problem

A front wheel-bearing magnetic encoder ring caused the lingering ABS issue — a small component that became one of the build's biggest lessons.

03 / THE LESSON

NOT EVERYTHING
GOES TO PLAN.

One of the most important parts of this rebuild happened after the GTI already looked nearly finished. The ABS warning remained, and the first diagnosis wasn't the answer.

The problem was eventually traced to the front wheel-bearing magnetic encoder ring. It was a reminder that rebuilding a car is not only about replacing visibly damaged parts. Sometimes the smallest hidden problem can stop the entire project from feeling complete.

04 / WHAT IT REALLY COST

THE NUMBERS.

PURCHASE + FEES + SHIPPING$13,050
PARTS + REPAIRS + PAINT$11,500
TOTAL INVESTED$24,550

The final number tells only part of the story. With 21,000 miles and a salvage history, the real question was whether the finished car would justify the time, work and money invested in bringing it back.

05 / THE RESULT

BACK ON
THE ROAD.

The finished blue Mk8 became more than another completed project. It also created a natural comparison with the white 2017 Mk7 GTI Autobahn — the car that started the Lakache Auto story.

Two generations, two rebuilds and years of lessons between them. That's what makes this build part of the larger Lakache Auto story.
